Cleaning up Your Dusty Garage

A lot of dust generating hobbies take place in garages. Anything that involves the sawing of wood or the running of engines is going to produce a lot of particulates. When these particles come to rest they form dust - a lot of it. Maybe it’s time to clean up your dusty garage.

The best rule for dusting is to start at the top and work down. When it comes to cleaning the cobwebby corners of your garage roof, the feather duster is the perfect implement. The technology (feathers glued to a stick) is so simple that you’d think the idea was ancient, but it’s not. The feather duster was invented in 1870, when broom manufacturer EE Hoag came up with the idea of attaching turkey feathers to a broom handle. These days, you are more likely to be dusting with synthetic fibres than feathers, although upmarket models utilising ostrich feathers are available.

Damp Dusting

Now you’ve tackled the ceiling you need to focus on the surfaces. In a garage, you don’t need to bring out the Mr Sheen, cupboard tops and work surfaces just need a wipe over with a damp cloth. This will pick up all the dust.

Vacuum Cleaning

Vacuum Cleaners aren’t just for carpets. A good vacuum cleaner will suck up all the dust that has gathered on your garage floor. While you’ve got it out, run the nozzle along the various parts of your garage door opening mechanism. If allowed to build up, particles of dust and spiders’ webs could affect the smooth opening and closing operation of your garage door.
