Going Electric – Will Garages Have to Adapt for Electric Cars?

An electric car on charge.

With the government’s announcement last year that the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles would be banned by 2040, the electric vehicle revolution could be happening very soon. With the arrival of this announcement last July, it’s likely that major car manufacturers will begin to produce their own electric vehicles. While EVs are already being integrated into society now, our roads and homes will have to adapt completely for the electric revolution.

Why Are We Moving to Electric Vehicles?

The serious health problems caused by the fumes and pollution from petrol and diesel vehicles are one of the major factors behind the announcement. In recent months, the government has begun to prioritise the welfare of the environment. Earlier this year, Theresa May announced her 25-year environmental plan.

The toxic fumes produced by motor vehicles and the damage they do to human life and the environment has been one of the biggest reasons behind the government’s announcement. It is thought air pollution is directly linked to about 40,000 premature deaths and the UK’s public transport also contributes to this.

This poor air quality is also a problem here in Norfolk and Norwich is included in a list of 30 places in the UK with higher than safe air pollution levels.

Adapting Garages

Although there are many different public charging points throughout the UK, having your own charging station is an important consideration to have in mind. Charging stations can be wall-mounted and need to be connected to the mains by a certified installer.

The space and shelter that garages provide make them an ideal choice for housing your electric vehicle. If your mains supply isn’t located in or close to your garage, you might have to have your property rewired to accommodate the electric vehicle.

If you fancy going totally green, you could look to have solar panels installed on the roof of your home and garage to produce the electricity used to power your vehicle. While there is no longer any government funding for those looking to have solar panels installed, making the investment is beneficial for your home in the long run.
