Improve Your Garage by Painting the Door

Paint ready to be applied to a garage door.

Just like the rest of the outside of your house, your garage door will be exposed to the elements all year round and will feel the effects of this. If you have an old steel garage door, paint will protect it from rust.

Preparing and Painting Your Garage Door

The care that you take when preparing your garage door for painting is probably more important than actually painting the door. Here’s the whole process step-by-step:

  • Clean the door – If the door is metal, it will need to be cleaned before it can hold a coast of paint. The simple classic rag and water method is advisable and should work well. If the water and cloth doesn’t work well enough, you may have to move to chemical substance. If the door has a latex finish don’t use a product containing alcohol as it could damage the surface.
  • Dry door and tape – Allow the door time to dry after you clean it, make sure that all the surface is completely dry before applying the paint too. Also, if your garage has any handles, trim or windows, it’s important that you use painters tape to mask them and protect them from the paint.
  • Fill dents and scratches – Dents and scratches in the surface of the door can affect how you paint the door. You should use a dent and scratch filler until these marks are as perfect as possible. Also, if there is any rust on the surface of the door you should use a wire brush to get rid of it.
  • Paint the Door – Make sure you have the right paint for the door. You can use a variety of tools to apply the paint to the door but to save time, a roller or sprayer is probably the best choice. If you haven’t used the paint sprayer before, practice on another object to ensure that you don’t have to make any adjustments. If the sprayer is not set up correctly, the paint could run and effect the final look of the painted door. If using a roller or brush, apply the paint evenly in straight lines.
