5 Products that Improve Life for Disabled People

In a world engineered solely with able-bodied people in mind, those with restricted mobility would be at a considerable disadvantage. Fortunately, designers and engineers have come up with life-improving products that make the working and home environment an easier place for everyone to navigate. Check out these five products that improve life for disabled people.

  1. Braille Smartphone: Up until now, blind users have had to engage with their smartphone via Siri or some other voice activated agent and we all know how (un)reliable those systems are. The braille smartphone looks set to change all that and make the world of texting and tweeting significantly easier for blind people.
  2. Stair Lift: For older disabled people, the stairs in their home can become a real barrier – sometimes restricting them to one floor of the house when there is no carer to assist them. Installing a stair lift can return the freedom to move around the house unassisted.
  3. Grab Rails: When people are a little unsteady when getting up, they need to use something to help them. A properly installed grab rail can take the weight of a human pulling themselves up. With no grab rail, a person might injure themselves trying to pull themselves upright on something that can’t take the force – like a bathroom sink.
  4. Automated Doors and Gates: For people with restricted mobility, struggling with heavy gates and doors becomes an impossibility. Automation is a simple safe and effective solution to this problem. We can install a brand new door or gate or we can automate your existing one.
  5. Kitchen Gadgets: For the heavily arthritic and people with missing fingers, the operation of can openers and the like can become increasingly difficult. Specialist gadgets designed to be used with one hand have been developed to meet the needs of these people.

Where there is a disability, there is usually a design or engineering solution that could mitigate it. It is often the case that it is our environments not our disabilities that truly disable us. In the case of doors and gates, we think we have the best solution for people with restricted mobility and other disabilities.
