5 Things to Consider When Adding a Garage to Your Property

Building a garage on your premises is a big investment, but it will make a valuable addition to your home. Should you wish to sell, a garage can increase the value of your property by an impressive 5-10%. In the meantime, a garage will dramatically increase your storage space and give you a place to pursue all those noisy and dusty hobbies. There’s a lot to think about before you call the builders in to start on the foundations. Here’s a few things you should bear in mind.

1. Planning Regulations

Generally, if your garage is not connected to the house and is smaller than 30 square metres then you don’t need planning permission. If you are uncertain then please check with your local planning office.

2. Exterior Design

Think about how your garage is going to look next to your house. Do you want to use the same kind of bricks or stonework? Maybe it’s time to repaint or stain all of your window frames.

3. Interior Design

This really depends on what you will be using your garage for. If you will be parking your car in it, then you will want a large central space. If you are taking up pole-lathing, then you will need a large workbench and a dry store for ageing wood.

4. Garage Door

There are many options to consider when it comes to your garage door, so it’s worth talking to the experts. Drop by our showroom on the Sweet Briar industrial estate to see our working examples of automated garage doors.

5. Insulation

Garages are often less well insulated than homes but, if you are planning on spending a lot of time in there, it is worth considering your insulation options right from the start. Roof insulation and a well-insulated garage door are a good start.
