Regular Garage Door Maintenance vs Repairs

Garage door servicing.

In the words of the Reformation scholar Erasmus: “Prevention is better than cure.” While Erasmus was more concerned with shaping Protestant theology than maintaining his automatic garage door, his wise words clearly apply to a broad spectrum of specialties. Having your garage door serviced annually is the easiest way to prevent any of the following problems occurring with your garage door. It is cheaper to maintain your door with an annual service than to repair or replace it once it is broken.

Common Issues

Here are some of the most common issues you might experience with your garage door:

  • Door doesn’t shut – The automatic garage doors that we supply and install have safety sensors on the door itself and on the motor. These are deliberately very sensitive and will prevent the door from shutting if they detect anything in the path of the door. During our annual service, we will make sure all sensors are clean and properly calibrated – making it less likely that they will falsely identify an obstruction.
  • Strange noises – After constant use, your garage door may begin to make a scraping noise as it opens or closes. These noises may be an indicator that there is an issue with your door’s bearings. Generously applying WD40 should help with this problem. However, if the noise continues, give us a call.
  • Slow to open/close – This is a frustrating inconvenience that could be the sign of a number of issues. Again, regular maintenance will prevent this from happening in the first place.
  • Door does what it wants – If your garage door opens and closes by itself, it could be an issue with the door’s circuit board. If this happens to your door, start by changing the batteries in the remote. However, if the issues persist, you should get the experts in to examine your door.
  • Remote does nothing – While this may be as simple as the batteries dying, there are other issues that can cause this problem. It could be an issue with the door’s motor or sensor system which will require expert attention.
