Steel:
When it comes to popularity, steel is by far the winner. Reasonably priced, durable and requiring very little maintenance, steel garage doors can be painted in just about any colour or finish to complement the style of your home. If you are thinking of choosing a door of this kind you may want to consider that steel is a poor insulator, so it pays to consider an insulated garage door if this is important to you.
Aluminium:
Very similar to steel, aluminium is one of the most cost effective materials and can be manufactured with a range of optional faux wood texturing and long lasting finishes. You should consider however that aluminium is more likely to dent.
Wood:
Original garage doors were manufactured from wood and this continues to be the material of choice for those customers looking for a traditional style to complement their home. A better insulator than steel, wood doors can range in price from the lowest option of painted wood with flat hardboard panels, to stain-grade wood that offers the warmth of natural wood.
Fibreglass:
One of the least commonly used door materials is fibreglass. Encased in aluminium frames, these doors tend to offer far more resistance to dents than steel. Fibreglass doors tend to be poor insulators and will fade due to weather exposure, though they make an excellent choice for properties in coastal locations due to their resistance to salt-water corrosion.
