Double Garage Dilemma: Should You Remove the Central Column?

A double garage with manual up and over garage doors.

If you are lucky enough to own a double garage, the chances are you have to compete with a large central brick column every time you reverse your car into the garage. It’s likely that after a few scrapes or close shaves you’ve thought to yourself: “One day I’m going to knock that brick column down for good”. In this blog, we will be talking about a solution to your problem, which doesn’t involve you shelling out thousands of pounds, knocking down the column and compromising your garage.

Why shouldn’t I just remove the brick column?

Of course, removing the brick column is an option, but the process could leave you several hundred pounds out of pocket. Unless you are a qualified structural engineer and removal expert, removing the brick column yourself is not advised as you could compromise the strength of your garage and reduce its value significantly.

What is the other solution to the problem?

The solution we recommend for this issue is much simpler than you might think. Instead of cutting into the brick column, we can replace the existing doors with sectional garage doors: freeing up several valuable inches of space either side of both garage doors. In many cases, this is a cheaper option that solves the problem of scraped paint on the bodywork of your car. Sectional doors gain you this extra space and they are also insulated, benefiting the garage in more than one way.

How can we help?

Here at Automated Garage Doors and Gates, we have a wide range of both automated and manual garage doors. We stock a variety of sectional garage doors, that could help solve your double garage problem. Our sectional garage door page contains more information on these versatile doors.
