Nine Garage Door Safety Tips

When it comes to automated garage doors, we are the experts. Being experts, we think it is important to share some of the valuable knowledge we have acquired whilst working in the industry for over 20 years. Safety surrounding your garage doors is very important to us – and we hope it is to you. Around 30,000 people are injured by garage doors every year. Our nine garage door safety tips should help to prevent any injuries to you or those around you.

  1. If you have an automated garage door, then make sure you keep the remote and control buttons out of the reach of small children.
  2. If your garage door has an emergency release feature, make sure you know how to use it.
  3. Make sure to inspect the door every couple of months. Check the doors springs, cables, rollers and pulleys for signs of damage. Should any of these parts be damaged then don’t attempt to try to replace or fix them or any parts attached to them yourself. Our specialist garage door repair team can repair and replace any parts quickly and return your door back to a safe condition.
  4. Test the reverse mechanism on your garage door by placing an object underneath the door as it closes. If the door doesn’t reverse after coming into contact with the object then the door may need to be repaired. Once again, our garage door repair team can assist you with this problem. Also, please make sure the object you use to check the mechanism isn’t yourself or another person.
  5. Make sure you never put fingers between sections on doors and explain these dangers to any children. If you have small children then ensure that your panel door will not pinch or catch clothing or hair.
  6. Do not leave your garage door partially opened as when the door is activated again it will continue going downwards and could cause injury. Leaving the door open partially is also obviously a major risk to your home’s security.
  7. Should you go on vacation or are not in the house for several days, then ensure you lock the console security switch: this makes the remote unusable meaning there can be no intruders in your home. This feature is optional on most openers.
  8. If your door opener doesn’t have rolling-code technology, be sure to change the manufacturer’s standard access codes on the opener and remote control. Rolling-code technology changes the code each time the opener is used to prevent code grabbing.
  9. Remember to keep your remote control in a secure location to ensure that nobody can steal the controller and gain access to your house. Ensure you don’t leave the controller in your car or in plain sight.
