Garage Door Art from Around the World

Vilnius the colourful garage town is starting to show its age after many years.

“I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint garage doors”. The words of famous artist Frida Kahlo (well, not quite, but you get the idea). What does art have to do with garage doors? You’d be forgiven for thinking these two do not go together at all but, actually, the two go together surprisingly well.

Soviet Garage Towns

Ah, the Soviet Union. Censorship, lies, constant fear and the smell of newly-painted garage towns. Yes, believe it or not, the Soviet Union provided the world with some of the most vibrantly painted garage doors. One of the best examples is the Lithuanian garage town of Vilnius. The outskirts of the city were built to house the cars of the proletariat. In what is often sold in the West as a bleak period for countries behind the Iron Curtain, the workers in these cities had their own cars and parked them in brightly-painted garage towns at the edge of their city.

Nearly every colour under the sun was visible on these doors and you can still see how splendidly painted they once were. The majority of the garages still display their distinctive colours, even if the years have left them looking a little dilapidated. People who parked their cars in the garage towns were required to catch a bus to actually make it back to their house.

3D Garage Door Murals

On the other end of the scale to the colourful Lithuanian garage art is the more modern 3D garage murals in America. These murals feature a range of designs from massive white crocodiles to a view of the New York skyline. These intricate designs are super realistic and would certainly catch an unsuspecting person out with their realistic designs. Check out some examples of the 3D murals here

Why is a Garage Door a Good Canvas?

Garage doors are a brilliant canvas for art for several reasons. For one, they’re usually visible for all passing by to see – meaning there is a wide audience to view your work. They’re also very large and won’t be moved around or damaged meaning the canvas is perfect for large designs. Painting your garage door can also bring your property to life and add that colour that will make it stand out in your neighbourhood.

Our automated garage doors are the perfect canvas for your art. Interested in upgrading your canvas? Contact us today, call us on 01603 787069 or email us on sales@autodoorsandgates.co.uk.
